Home Office Additions and Room Conversions
With the COVID-19 pandemic instantly creating a remote workforce, people have been thrust into setting up home offices. From makeshift spaces in living and dining rooms to setting up tables in unfinished basements, everyone has tried to get creative in order to keep on working. For many, these non-dedicated office spaces are simply not cutting it. In fact, a Zillow survey found that office space tops the Wishlist for potential home shoppers as two-thirds of those polled said they were not working from a room that was a dedicated home office. The good news is, you don’t necessarily need to move to get the separate office space that you crave. You can stay in the home you love if you renovate it.
Add an Office with an Addition
Create the extra room needed for an office by extending the square footage with a home addition. Depending upon your lot size, you can build up or build out. A second or third story addition will allow you to construct the new space you need – and it will enable the office space to be away from the hustle and bustle of the main living areas, which means a quieter workplace. If you have ample property, you can build a home office extension onto the first floor or over an attached garage. This is a particularly good option if you need a separate entrance to accommodate client meetings.
Build an Office in the Basement
A basement can offer hundreds and hundreds of additional square feet of living space. By finishing this untapped area, you can create a dedicated home office for less than the cost of an addition and within a much smaller time frame. So, it is definitely an economical and practical option. Of course, inspections will be necessary to make sure there are not water issues and if any are identified they will need to be remedied. An office in the basement also allows you to be away from the household noise so you can stay focused on your work. Depending upon the grade of your lot, you may even be able to add an access door for clients.
Convert Your Garage into a Home Office
No basement and don’t want to tackle an addition? Then consider converting your garage into a home office. Whether attached or separate, this space can be insulated and finished, making it an ideal work space away from the daily bustle of the household.
