The bathroom may not be the largest room in the house, but renovating it requires thoughtful preparation. For such a small space there is so much to consider – from sufficient water supply and natural light to tile, vanity, fixtures and paint color. The following checklist will help you cover all aspects of the remodel and keep you on track.

Total square footage of the new bathroom – if you are expanding its size
Do I want to make the bathroom larger by doing an addition or taking space from other rooms
Do I want to remove or add walls
Do I want to change the room’s existing layout, i.e., move the tub, shower or sink
If I move features, do I need to move plumbing
If I am adding more water features, do I need to upgrade existing plumbing

What sink dimensions
What type of faucets do I want and in what finish
What type of vanity do I want – natural wood tones or painted
What style of knobs or handles
What vanity dimensions
Do I want storage in addition to the vanity, if so, where do I put this in the layout and what are the dimensions
What type of countertops do I want, i.e., granite, marble, porcelain
What type of edging do I want for the countertops
Shower and Tub
Do I want a separate tub and shower
Do I only want a walk-in shower
What type of water features do I want in the shower, i.e., rain shower head, jets, hand-held faucet
Will these water features require more plumbing lines
What are the dimensions of the shower
What type of tile do I want for the shower – both walls and floor
Do I want feature tile in the shower
What color grout do I want
Do I want a niche in the shower and if so how many and what size
Do I want glass doors or a shower curtain
If glass doors, do I want framed or seamless doors
Do I want clear glass or another type of glass
Do I want a separate soaking tub, if so, what style and dimensions
Mirrors and Medicine Cabinets
Do I want a medicine cabinet, if so, what dimensions
What type and size of mirror/s do I want
Lighting
What lighting do I want – sconces by mirror, recessed lighting, fan with light, chandelier
Retain a Contractor and Formalize Plans
Interview and hire a contractor
Discuss wish list and ideas with contractor
Have contractor draw up plans
Review plans and make any changes
Timeline
Set a deadline for the bathroom remodel
Obtain Permits
Apply for the necessary work permits
